Say your name…. Write about your first name: Are you named after someone or something? Are there any stories or associations attached to it? If you had the choice, would you rename yourself?
For those of you that don’t know, my name is Lara.
Originally I was to be called Victoria. But my parents were pipped to the post by a couple they were friends with who got in there three days before they did.
So they went with Lara. It comes from the book Dr Zchivago, which then became the Julie
Christie/Omar Sharif classic in 1965. Given that my parents didn’t meet til 1969 and I was born in 1970 ( you do the math) I’m not sure why the name resonated with them but there you go.
No child likes to be different. No one had heard of the name Lara when I started school. I spent years correcting people who called me Laura. There were three Victorias in my year. I longed to be a Victoria so that everyone would know how to spell and pronounce my name. Worst of all for a 7 year old? Not be able to have a ruler/pencil/rubber with my name printed on it. Every January my friends would return to school brandishing their named stationary. I just wanted one thing with my name on…
When I started high school, miracle of miracles, I met another Lara. Confusingly we became very good friends and at least I didn’t have to keep explaining to anyone how to spell my name.
I also began to quite like having an (more or less, with the arrival of my NBF) original name. I was glad I didn’t have to explain which Victoria I was.
With the arrival of Lara Croft, (and possibly due to the remake of Dr Zchivago with Skinny Knightly) there are suddenly more Laras about, although still not loads. And nowadays you can get any name on any thing.
I still have yet to meet another Lara over the age of 15 but I love my name. I’m glad I’m not a Victoria now. And thanks Tomb Raider, at least everyone knows how to spell it :)
