On Saturday Rubbish Wife came to play. I greeted her at the door in my Bagpuss dressing gown, no makeup and Velcro rollers in my hair.
Let me explain…
In honour of RW coming to stay Chez PluckySticks I had ordered groceries from Sainsbury’s to arrive between 9 and 10 (not too early to get us up, not too late for our order to contain bread for toast). At quarter past 10 I was standing with the phone tucked under my chin, trying to blow-dry my hair (you try it!) whilst on hold to Sainsbury’s Customer Service attempting to find out where my shopping was. In the end I left the phone with MrS, who appeared five minutes later and said ominously “you’re not going to like this”.
Apparently although our order was “showing on the system” the local store that handled the deliveries (Crayford. For Crayford read Crapford, we’ve been here before…) “had no record of it” and when the nice CS lady had tried to get the branch member to speak to us they wouldn’t. She emailed me a £30 voucher for compensation. I smelt a rat and I ran off a stream of angry tweets to Sainsbury’s customer care account. But there we were foodless and I was running late in my Bagpuss dressing gown and no makeup.
Cue scenes reminiscent of Mallory Towers as RW and I finished getting ready whilst yakking at each other across the landing (if Darrell Rivers and Sally Hope had worn Phase 8 and LK Bennett). MrS ran us to the station (still yakking). Tidy.
No delayed trains of a weekend. Oh no. We were sitting cocktail in hand ready to meet Pauleen and Halcyon at Madison before you know it (me still having a conversation with Sainsbury’s twitter account).
Madison is fab, accessible but with a wow factor, overlooking St. Paul’s and offering a fantastic view of the southern London Skyline. It’s actually free to go up there if you just want to stand and look. I have sat up there wrapped in blankets and woolly hats in the middle of winter with Lindsey (honeytothe) drinking Pornstar Martinis so it was nice to sit up there in the sun again. I think the mixed weather forecast had caught people out as there was hardly anyone there when we arrived.
It was so lovely to meet the others having tweeted together so long. We were sorry that two ladies had been unable to join us as planned, Peasbloss and EscapedHere, but we all had an extra cocktail for them.
You pay for the view when you pay for drinks at Madison, however the restaurant is really reasonable given its situation and view (especially so when compared to Jamie Oliver’s Barbecoa and Ramsey’s Bread Street Kitchen in the same building). We were booked for lunch at 2pm, and didn’t leave until 5pm, by which time the tables either side of us had been turned round twice and the bar out on the rooftop was full.
We didn’t draw breath all afternoon and as we were too full to have a dessert we all had an after lunch drink. I have finally found another place that makes White Chocolate Martini. We took a quick look at the view and a snapshot of the four of us but decided against trying to get another drink as it was packed.
Having dispatched the others in a taxi back to Waterloo RW and I returned to Chez PluckySticks to drink tea. Well, it can’t all be rock and roll can it?
PS Having been contacted by Sainsbury’s again after my tweets I got another £20 compensation from them. I love the internet.
